Paleoclimate instabilities during late Oligocene - Early Miocene in SW Europe from new geochemical climofunctions based on soils with pedogenic carbonate

چکیده
In this study, two new climofunctions based on major elements are proposed from the study of 28 modern alluvial soils with pedogenic carbonate NE Spain. The first climofunction relates a base ratio (CaO, K2O) to mean annual temperature (MAT), and second one clayeness (Al2O3/SiO2) precipitation (MAP). both climofunctions, use parent material as normalizer gave best results, taking into account natural variability deposits. Application these 86 paleosols Oligo-Miocene successions in southern France central Spain was performed, combined morphological functions previously proposed, aim build detailed paleoclimatic data for key period climate history. This work provides high frequency record (range 10s 100 s kyr) paleoclimate fluctuations, estimated MAP methods very comparable (mean ~ 550 mm/yr). Estimated MAT MARP range precipitations) mainly exhibit same trends: 1) values followed by rapid decrease during early Aquitanian (from 18.8 13.5 °C; 80 20 mm), 2) warming trend towards middle (up 16.6 °C, 90 3) cooling (down 13.4 40 mm) late – Burdigalian. Comparisons paleontological remains indicate similar times lower paleosols. However, consistency between previous paleopedological investigations suggests regional pattern (southern Spain) precursor Mediterranean conditions that developed Neogene whereas humid prevailed western coastal basins Europe. Periods large amplitude fluctuations interpreted reflecting interrelation Miocene instability (Mi1, Mi1a events) continental climate.

Geochemical Climofunctions from North American Soils and Application to Paleosols across the Eocene-Oligocene Boundary in Oregon
The degree of chemical weathering in soils increases with mean annual precipitation (P; mm) and mean annual temperature (T; C). We have quantified these relationships using a database of major-element chemical analyses of 126 North American soils. The most robust relationship found was between P and the chemical index of alteration without potash (CIA-K): with . Another strong relationship was ...
متن کاملLate Oligocene and Early Miocene Muroidea of the Zinda Pir Dome
A series of Oligocene through Early Miocene terrestrial deposits preserved in the foothills of the Zinda Pir Dome of western Pakistan produce multiple, superposed fossil mammal localities. These include small mammal assemblages that shed light on the evolution of rodent lineages, especially Muroidea, in South Asia. Nine small mammal localities span approximately 28-19 Ma, an interval encompassi...
متن کاملGEOLOGICAL NOTE Global Aridity during the Early Miocene? A Terrestrial Paleoclimate Record from the Ebro Basin, Spain
Paleosols are an important tool in the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental interpretation of continental deposits and can provide a high-resolution proxy for paleoclimate. Results from geochemical climofunctions applied to Early Miocene strata exposed in the Ebro Basin, Spain, demonstrate that mean annual precipitation was the dominant control on paleosol type and indicate that the paleoclimat...
متن کاملLate Oligocene–Early Miocene paleosols of distal fluvial systems, Ebro Basin, Spain
The study of paleosols can be a vital tool in the paleoenvironmental interpretation of continental deposits because their physical and chemical characteristics are a reflection of variations in aspects of soil formation. Changes in paleosol characteristics can be used to determine the architecture and nature of parent material, paleosol maturity, topography, climate and soil-forming organisms (...
متن کاملOrbitally induced climate and geochemical variability across the Oligocene/Miocene boundary
To assess the influence of orbital-scale variations on late Oligocene to early Miocene climate and ocean chemistry, high-resolution (~5 kyr) benthic foraminiferal carbon and oxygen isotope and percent coarse fraction time series were constructed for Ocean Drilling Program site 929 on Ceara Rise in the western equatorial Atlantic. These time series exhibit pervasive lowto high-frequency variabil...
